Party planning wasn’t always a part of the life goal for Mindy Weiss. She started out designing custom invitations, but before long, friends and clients had convinced her to take her talents to the next level. She began creating and throwing custom events, applying her stylish ideas and spot-on attention to detail to every aspect of the process. Mindy fell in love with creating parties, and she never looked back.

Now, more than 20 years later, Mindy Weiss Party Consultants designs celebrations all over the world for an eclectic mix of clients. From star-studded sophisticated weddings to intimate and personal baby showers, Mindy creates thoughtful and unique parties for each of them. 

Here, she lets us in on where she finds her inspiration and gives tips for throwing the perfect party.

While growing up, was event planning and design your passion? No! I planned my first event in college. I was social chairman of my sorority, planning trips and events. I never wanted to be a party planner—I loved my weekends! But after my first official event for a client, I knew it was what I wanted to do.

How did you get your start in the party-design industry? I first owned and designed custom invitations for about five years. In 1992, one of my clients convinced me to plan his birthday. From that day on, I was hooked.

What trends do you see for fall and winter? I’m most excited about bringing the outside in and the inside out! I love gardens inside and a living room outside. 

What is your go-to centerpiece when entertaining? A vintage vase filled with one color rose. Roses are always available. They are hardy and last long. And I always use as many candles as I can fit on a table!

What advice do you have for readers trying to pursue their passion? To make your dreams a reality, you have to get to work! You need to be prepared to work hard, long hours, and you may miss some life memories while working 16-hour days. If you are up for that, then dive in with a smile. Have patience and creativity, and watch the business start flowing in!

What are your plans for the future? Things are really stirring this fall and the beginning of 2015. Lots of great parties and weddings all around the world! And releasing a new book in 2015!

Mindy’s Top 6 Party-Planning Tips

1 Consider the guests you invited when planning your dinner menu—design a menu that will please all involved.

2 Planning a great party includes arranging for good conversation. Think about place cards at your tables—having the right people sitting next to each other can really help the comfort level, especially if you invited guests who do not know each other. 

3 If you are not having tables for everyone to sit at, then make sure you do have lounge or alternative seating for your guests. Depending on your menu, most guests do not like to eat standing up.

4 If hosting a party at your home, don’t forget to place flowers or a fragrant candle in the bathroom, as well as hand towels. Your guests will notice the details!

5 If you are entertaining outdoors and there is a possibility that it may be cold, you must have heaters. If it is very warm, make sure seating is shaded and food is kept at the right temperature. Also, always have a rain plan! 

6 If the party is in the evening, consider hiring a lighting company. If you are entertaining outdoors in the evening, you want to have enough light for your guests to see their meal but not so bright that it takes away from an intimate evening.
