Applewood Bacon Fried Green Tomatoes

A classic southern dish, these fried green tomatoes complement any springtime or summer meal. 

Applewood Bacon Fried Green Tomatoes

Ingredients
  1. 1 (11⁄2-pound) package applewood- smoked bacon
  2. Vegetable oil for frying
  3. 2 large eggs
  4. 2 tablespoons water
  5. 2 cups self-rising cornmeal mix 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  6. 2 teaspoons onion powder
  7. 1 1⁄2 teaspoons salt
  8. 1 1⁄2 teaspoons ground black pepper
  9. 8 green tomatoes, cut into 1⁄2-inch-thick slices
  10. Herb Dressing (recipe follows)
Instructions
  1. In a large skillet, cook bacon over medium heat until browned and crispy. Remove bacon, and drain on paper towels. Crumble and set aside. Reserve 1⁄4 cup bacon drippings in pan. Add oil to drippings to a depth of 1⁄4 inch. Heat oil to 350°.
  2. In a shallow dish, whisk together eggs and water. In a separate shallow dish, combine cornmeal mix, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Dip each tomato slice into egg mixture, allowing excess to drain. Dredge tomatoes in cornmeal mixture, coating completely. Fry for 1 to 2 minutes on each side until golden brown. Drain on paper towels. Top with Herb Dressing and crumbled bacon. Serve immediately.

Ingredients
  1. 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  2. 1 cup sour cream
  3. 1⁄4 cup mayonnaise
  4. 2 tablespoons chopped fresh dill
  5. 1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives
  6. 1⁄4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  7. 1⁄4 teaspoon garlic powder
Instructions
  1. In a medium bowl, combine cream cheese, sour cream, mayonnaise, dill, chives, pepper, and garlic powder. Beat at medium speed with an electric mixer until combined. Cover, and refrigerate until ready to serve.
